Philanthropist and entrepreneur Robert F. Smith is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners (Vista). Vista is a global technology investor that specializes in enterprise software (B2B SaaS) through private market strategies, including private equity and private credit. Vista’s private wealth solutions team works directly with wealth professionals to provide eligible investors with access to investments in enterprise software.

Smith’s leadership extends beyond the boardroom, with active roles in civic, cultural and academic institutions. He serves on the Board of Directors of Grand Slam Track and as Chairman of Student Freedom Initiative (SFI). Smith also serves on the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School and as a member of the Cornell Engineering College Council, where his leadership and generosity were honored through the naming of the Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

He is Chairman of Carnegie Hall and the founding director and President of Fund II Foundation. The Fund II Foundation provides grants to public charities that support progress and opportunity in communities that traditionally have lacked access to resources.

In 2017, Smith became the first Black American to sign the Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of his wealth to charitable causes. Two years later, he made a gift to eliminate the student loan debt of approximately 400 Morehouse College graduates, including the debt incurred by their parents or guardians on their behalf. After his transformative gift to Morehouse College, Smith supported the launch of SFI. The nonprofit is designed to help relieve the burden of student debt and provide freedom in professional and life choices for students at partner Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Smith also co-leads Southern Communities Initiative, a catalytic program with a mission to accelerate wealth creation and economic growth in six Southern U.S. communities.

Smith’s business achievements and global philanthropic works have been recognized by numerous entities. Among them, Smith was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2019. In recognition of Smith’s innovative approach to investing in software businesses and his leadership in the asset management industry, he was named one of Forbes’ “100 Greatest Living Business Minds” in 2017. In 2022, Smith was recognized with theGrio’s Philanthropy Icon Award, the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Visionary Award and the National Arts Award. He was also honored with the Legal Defense Fund’s National Equal Justice Award and the George H.W. Bush Points of Light Award in 2023 and the Committee for Economic Development’s Distinguished Leadership Award in 2024. In 2025, Smith was named to the inaugural TIME100’s “Most Influential People in Philanthropy.”
