Bill Westrate

Bill oversees the American Family Insurance Group and is actively engaged in the strategy, operations, business development and innovation efforts at the organization. He has served as a driving force in American Family’s customer-focused transformation over the past decade. Today, American Family Insurance is a mutual holding company, operating nationally through multiple insurance operating companies, offering property/casualty and life insurance products, distributed directly to consumers, through commercial partnerships and local agencies.

Bill started with American Family in 1996 as an actuarial analyst. After progressing through numerous leadership roles in the actuarial and product-line areas, he was elected chief operating officer in 2014, and three years later, he was named American Family’s enterprise president. In January 2022, Bill moved into his current position as CEO, and in 2024, he was also named chair of the board of directors.

Bill earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Northwestern College. He is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and is a member and past chair of the board of directors for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

American Family is committed to positively impacting the communities the company serves, and Bill has been actively engaged in non-profit organizations throughout his career, including the United Way of Dane County, where he is past chair and continues to serve on the board.
